While traveling in the eastern United States, we visited Monticello...home of Thomas Jefferson. We were impressed with the story of Mulberry Row. On a summer's day in 1796 Mulberry Row would have been humming with activity, with over 30 people at work in it's shops and yards. As daylight faded, the shops grew silent and the dwellings at Mulberry Row were animated by the return of Monticello's workers. Named for the mulberry trees planted along it, this 1,000 ft long road was the center of plantation activity.

Monticello's laborer's worked from dawn till dusk, six days a week. Only after their long work day, and on Sundays and holidays, could they follow their own pursuits. Music, dancing, and prayer meetings, as well as midnight excursions in search of wild honey, were a few of the things friends & family enjoyed at Mulberry Row.
